The model of the Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII (“Community Pope John 23rd”) acts on multiple fronts, because no single action alone would be enough to make a difference. Any initiative, disconnected from the others would only be welfarism. Over the last 25 years, the Community has developed a system of large-scale intervention, integrating assistance for food and health, scholastic and higher education, professional training, as well as helping to provide a range of financial services to the poor, thus encouraging local entrepreneurship, through a local system of microcredits. All these tools are necessary for improving living conditions in developing countries. It’s not enough to be cured of a disease if do you not have anything to eat, or to get professional training if you do not have the resources to work and become independent. The Community’s approach is to answer the immediate needs (through food and nutrition centres and emergency first-aid centres) as well as working to remove the causes of poverty in the long run. It is therefore a commitment towards achieving short and long term results with the aim of overcoming once and for all the injustice of marginalisation, famine and distress. We feel strongly about our responsibility to give back the resources, opportunities and dignity that have been denied to these people. |
