In a world where 80% of the population live without social protection, and where the gap between those who have nothing and those who have plenty is widening, it is evident that society is continuing to contribute to this profound injustice. We need to make a leap in our mindset when it comes to international politics, in the choices that national leaders make, and especially within our own conscious minds. We must assert the principle of international solidarity, encouraging countries to work together in their response to emergencies. However, this is still not enough. The Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII (“Community Pope John 23rd”) believes that it is even more important to establish a solidarity that’s based on "ante factum," that is, a type of solidarity towards prevention that calls for countries to cooperate in the removal of the causes, the roots of the problem. We need to go from being just a human race, to considering ourselves a "human family". |
