Hunger is not a tragic fate. When we are faced with a child dying of hunger, we often believe that there is nothing we can really do to save this child.Hunger is not exactly a condition, it is not an outright social status, but it is a consequence of a great injustice: a small part of the world's richer population that maintains its well-being and power by forcing poorer countries into a state of dependence on them, stripping the millions of poor around the world of any free choice and keeping them in a state of helpless reliance on others. Our 25 years of missionary experience and of sharing our lives directly with the poor has really evidenced the fact that poverty is not only a condition that affects a person economically, but even more gravely, it is a condition that denies human dignity: the poor not only have nothing, but they believe they are worth nothing. Around 1 billion people suffer from famine worldwide. For us at the Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII (“Community Pope John 23rd”),this isn’t just a number, but real faces, that don’t seek us for charity, but seek our help for justice. |
