The Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII (“Community Pope John 23rd”) was founded by Father Oreste Benzi in 1968 and is active in 27 countries worldwide with more than 500 facilities, including Family Homes, food and nutrition centres, Capanne di Betlemme (‘Stables of Bethlehem’ - shelters for the homeless), alcohol and drug rehabilitation centres, social cooperatives, and emergency first-aid centres. The Community also cooperates on projects that promote humanitarian development in areas of conflict through their own peace corp, called Operation Dove. Since 2006, the Community has collaborated with the United Nations in Special Consultative Status with the ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council), with a committed representative taking an active role in meetings where international leaders make critical decisions on the welfare of humanity, hence becoming a voice for the voiceless. The Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII is made up of people who choose to share their daily lives with the least considered of society: the marginalised, the poor, abandoned children and the lonely.
